As a general rule, the closer the container-engaging rod is to the bottom of the container, the greater the force required to depress the plunger to engage the bottom of the container. If the movement of the container-engaging rod is relatively slow, the force required to depress the plunger is relatively low. If the movement of the container-engaging rod is relatively fast, the force required to depress the plunger is relatively high. Mechanical devices of this type are commonly provided with means for adjusting the speed of the plunger and the rod to accommodate containers having different depths. Various devices have also been proposed for adjusting the vertical position of the container-engaging rod. For instance, certain devices require the user to push a button on a handle of the device to move the rod to a desired position. Other devices have to be adjusted by rotating a screw or other component having a corresponding pitch screw. There is a need, for instance, in the trucking industry for a mechanical device of this type, but which eliminates the requirement for a manual adjustment of the device by a user to move the rod to a desired position.
